A good place to begin

Two days. A few favorites.
No need to rush.

For your first 48 hours in Bend, Oregon, start with downtown and Drake Park, then spend your second day at the High Desert Museum and Old Mill District. This relaxed itinerary gives you a few places to get to know, time by the Deschutes River, and space to stop when something catches your eye.

01Day one: Downtown Bend and Drake Park

Morning: Breakfast and a downtown wander

Allow 1–2 hours.

Start with breakfast or coffee downtown, then browse along Wall and Bond streets. Choose a few places that interest you and let the rest wait. If you’re arriving after lunch, begin here in the afternoon and keep dinner nearby.

Check parking signs before leaving your car. A quick coffee can easily become a longer stop, and you’ll enjoy it more without wondering when your parking expires.

Afternoon: Walk beside Mirror Pond

Allow 1–2 hours, including time to sit.

Head to Drake Park and Mirror Pond ↗, beside downtown. The park has nearly half a mile of riverfront, open lawn, picnic tables, and paved paths. Follow the water for as long as you like, then return the same way. You don’t need to cross a bridge or complete a loop.

Keep lunch in the same general area. It saves you moving the car every time someone gets hungry. Leave room for another shop, a longer pause in the park, or a break at your accommodation.

Evening: Keep dinner simple

Choose somewhere that fits your group’s appetite and budget, then check its own hours and reservation policy. Keep the evening flexible rather than planning around an unverified event or opening time.

02Day two: High Desert Museum and the Old Mill District

Morning: Get to know the high desert

Allow 2–3 hours, plus travel.

Head south of town to the High Desert Museum ↗, where exhibitions explore the region’s wildlife, history, art, and cultures. Check current admission and opening hours before leaving; the museum uses seasonal hours.

Give yourself enough time to follow your interests rather than trying to see everything. There are indoor galleries and outdoor areas, so bring a layer even if you expect to spend most of the morning inside.

Afternoon: Lunch and a short riverside walk

Allow 2–3 hours, including lunch.

Head back toward town to the Old Mill District. Use the district’s map ↗ to choose a starting point near the restaurants and shops you want to visit.

After lunch, take a short riverside out-and-back. Turn around whenever you’re ready; no particular bridge crossing is needed for this stop.

↗If the weather changes

Move the museum visit to whichever day suits the forecast, focus on its indoor galleries, and shorten the outdoor stops. Pack water and a layer, and check conditions before setting out. If your group needs step-free routes or other accommodations, check the venue’s current information rather than assuming every suggested walk will suit everyone.

Leave your final hour open for a meal or a place you want to revisit. Two days gives you enough time to find a few favorites without rushing between them.

Leave a little room

The best stop might be unplanned.

Keep your final hour open for a favorite place, another coffee, or a little more time beside the water.
